Clerks Award: Quick Classification Guide

The Clerks Award (Clerks—Private Sector Award 2020) sets out the minimum legal entitlements for employees in the clerical and office roles. What are the different classifications?

The Clerks award has two classification streams, office and clerical roles and call centre employees. Below we will provide a quick description of each stream and classification.

Office and Clerical Roles

This stream covers office and clerical roles, ranging from entry-level positions to highly skilled and autonomous roles. Employees handle tasks like communications, record-keeping, business software and customer service. As they progress they take on specialized duties, show greater initiative and may lead/train others.

  • Level 1 - New recruits with limited experience. Tasks include basic clerical duties like answering phones, filing and mail handling, usually performed under close supervision.
  • Level 2 - Employees with some experience or training. Responsibilities include typing, basic IT tasks, and customer service, performed with general direction.
  • Level 3 - Employees handling more complex tasks with limited supervision. They may train others and perform tasks like payroll and bookkeeping.
  • Level 4 - Employees with industry-specific knowledge who manage workloads, supervise others and provide executive support, with limited supervision.
  • Level 5 - High-level roles with significant expertise. Employees advise on complex issues, supervise others and train less experienced staff.

Call Centre Employees

This stream focuses on call centre roles, from customer service to leadership. Employees handle inquiries, coordinate teams, and manage complex service environments.

  • Call centre principal customer contact leader - Oversees multiple teams, applies advanced skills and coordinates operations. Requires significant leadership and qualifications.
  • Call centre technical associate - Manages telecommunications systems and equipment, handling complex tasks like system design, installation and troubleshooting.
